How To Motivate Yourself To Do Homework: 7 Effective Techniques

Are you finding it difficult to stay motivated with getting your homework done? Are you always behind on finishing assignments? Or perhaps you’re just looking for ways to increase your grades and do better in your classes? Either way, the following 7 strategies are just for you!

  1. Turn off the television or the computer, whichever is enticing you to set and watch movies. Instead, use this as a reward for after you’ve gotten your homework finished. This way you’ll get more done and can stay on schedule. It’s a win-win situation.
  2. Set your timer. Use a timer to time yourself when you’re working on school work. If you know you can’t concentrate very well after about 30 minutes, then set the timer for 30 minutes and buckle down and do your best for that amount of time. After the timer rings, you can set the timer again, but this time it’s for some fun time. Go on a website you like, go for a walk, go get a snack or do whatever; just make sure you take your timer with you and as soon as it rings, set it and go back to work.
  3. Give yourself small rewards along the way. Many students find this to be a big motivator to keep yourself on track. A reward for finishing your math assignment, a reward for writing your English essay, a reward for having assignments handed in on time for an entire week. You can save bigger rewards for bigger accomplishments.
  4. Stay hydrated throughout your study time. While you are working your brain is working hard, even though your body is mostly motionless. You need to keep your cells hydrated as well. Try to stay away from carbonated and overly sweet beverages. Clear water is actually the best to use.
  5. Make yourself a list of reasons why you should keep your school work done on a regular basis. Post this list up in a place where you can see it every day. It will remind you of the reasons you are putting this much time and effort into being successful.
  6. Do instead of try. If you just say you’ll try to get your school assignments done every day, that’s all you’ll do is try. Instead change your wording and your thinking into something you will do. Make a commitment to yourself that you will do your assignments every day.
  7. Don’t give up just because it doesn’t work out one day. Start over and just keep on going.
